If you earn $3/day, your "poorness" is ⅓ of a day per dollar. This chart averages that score across every person — so the poorest pull the number up far more than the richest pull it down. It reveals what GDP per capita hides: inequality.

Luxembourg and the USA have nearly identical average incomes (~$84/day), yet the US score is 2.5× worse — because the US has a much longer tail of very low earners, and each one contributes enormously to the average while high earners barely move it. Traditional poverty measures just count heads below a line; this one captures the full depth. Since 1990, US inequality grew faster than incomes (worsening the score from 43 to 63 min), while European countries improved.

Champions League: The most-watched annual club competition on Earth is 100% European. Real Madrid alone has won it 15 times — and billions tune in every season.

Europe's Football Leagues: La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 — four of the five most valuable football leagues in the world are in the EU, attracting global audiences and top talent.

Cycling Grand Tours: All three — Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Vuelta a España — are EU events, with the Tour alone drawing 3.5 billion cumulative TV viewers.

24 Hours of Le Mans: The world's oldest active endurance race, held in France since 1923. A centenary of motorsport heritage watched globally.

Roland Garros: One of tennis's four Grand Slams and the most prestigious clay-court event in the world, hosted in Paris since 1891.

Myth

The EU is weak

Reality

The EU is the 2nd largest economy on Earth (~€18T GDP) — ahead of China. Its 450 million citizens form the world's largest single market, with deeper economic integration than any other trade bloc. Through landmark agreements like EU-Mercosur and EU-India, it is building a democratic trade network spanning 2.5 billion people. Its regulatory influence — the Brussels Effect — means EU standards shape global markets from data privacy to food safety.

Myth

The US economy is unbeatable

Reality

In 2025, the euro strengthened sharply against the dollar and European equities outperformed the S&P 500. US tariff wars are dragging down global growth according to the IMF. The US national debt exceeds €33 trillion — over 120% of GDP — while the eurozone averages ~89%. An Oxford economist measured poverty as the average time to earn $1, accounting for inequality: 63 minutes in the US vs. 26 in Germany and 31 in France — and it's been getting worse since 1990. GDP that only accrues to the top isn't wealth. Capital and credibility are shifting toward Europe.

Countries around the world ran a giant uncontrolled experiment on their own children in the 2010s by giving them smartphones and social media accounts. The available evidence suggests that the experiment has harmed them. It is time to call it off.

World Happiness Report 2026, Chapter 3 — Jonathan Haidt & Zach Rausch

Meta found guilty of harming children's mental health — can this change Meta's way?

The US just saw two landmark rulings against social-media companies. In the highest-profile case, a jury in New Mexico found that social-media giant Meta knowingly harmed the mental health of children — and concealed its knowledge of child sexual exploitation on its platforms. The decision follows a seven-week trial and saw Meta hit with a $375 million fine. It's the first time a jury has ruled against Mark Zuckerberg's company on child exploitation claims.

Myth

Europeans are overtaxed for nothing

Reality

Those taxes fund universal healthcare, tuition-free universities, 4+ weeks of paid leave, generous parental leave, and world-class public infrastructure — trains, roads, and broadband that rank among the best globally. EU citizens live longer, healthier, and more financially secure lives than their American counterparts on most metrics. Medical bankruptcy is virtually nonexistent. Student debt is a fraction of American levels. It's not a tax burden — it's the highest return on investment any society has achieved.

Myth

Europe is being overrun by immigrants

Reality

America was built by immigrants and became the greatest economy in history because of it. Japan and South Korea chose the opposite path — closed borders, low birth rates — and the Bank of Korea now projects permanent recession by the 2040s. Japan recorded its fewest births since 1899. No cash incentive has reversed it. Without immigration, the EU faces the same fate — immigrants keep pensions funded, hospitals staffed, and economies growing. Since 2021, the majority of new EU jobs were filled by foreign-born workers. A Stanford study found immigrants are 60% less likely to be incarcerated. Europe's real threat is not too many people coming in — it's not enough.

What does “clean” mean?

  • NuclearZero-carbon baseload power. France alone produces more nuclear electricity than most countries produce total.
  • 💨WindEurope leads globally in offshore wind. Denmark pioneered it; Germany, Netherlands and France are scaling fast.
  • ☀️SolarSouthern Europe's sunshine asset. Spain, Italy and Germany are top EU producers.
  • 💧HydroThe Alpine backbone. Austria, Sweden and France supply massive clean baseload.
  • 🌿BiomassAgricultural waste, wood residues and biogas supplement the mix renewably.

Why does the Renewable Energy Share chart above show a lower number? That chart measures renewables across all energy use (electricity + heating + transport) and excludes nuclear. This chart measures electricity generation only and includes nuclear — a much greener picture.

🔄 Seasonal variation: The live mix shifts significantly with the seasons. Winter sees strong wind output and high nuclear baseload but minimal solar. Summer flips this — solar surges while wind tends to dip. Hydro peaks in spring from snowmelt, while autumn brings fierce North Sea winds. Nuclear provides a constant clean backbone year-round.

Data refreshed daily from the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform — the official real-time record of European electricity generation.

Sustainability isn't ideology — it's mathematics. If something is unsustainable, by definition, it will end.

Europe chose to build what lasts.

Europe is not just a place. It is an idea — the most ambitious peace project in human history.

And the data shows it's working. Every chart on this page is proof.

Throughout challenging times, Europe went for further integration — to unite and not to divide, to make the common project of Europe stronger.

Myth

The EU is too bureaucratic

Reality

Over 85% of EU laws pass at first or second reading — faster than most national parliaments. The EU Green Deal, Digital Markets Act, and AI Act — landmark legislation reshaping global markets — were all delivered within single parliamentary terms. The GDPR became the global gold standard for privacy regulation within two years of passing. The US Congress, by comparison, routinely fails to pass major legislation for decades — gun reform, immigration, and healthcare have stalled for a generation.

Myth

Europe can't innovate

Reality

ASML holds a global monopoly on EUV lithography — every advanced chip on Earth requires it. Airbus overtook Boeing as the world's leading aircraft manufacturer. Myth

Europe can't defend itself

Reality

EU defense spending hit €343B in 2024 and is projected to reach €381B in 2025 — nearly double a decade ago. The EU has announced plans to mobilize €800B in additional defense investment. Rheinmetall, Thales, Airbus, MBDA, Dassault, and Saab are world-class manufacturers. France provides nuclear deterrence. Combined EU spending exceeds China's by ~1.5× and is more than 3× Russia's. Europe's 1.4 million active troops and 27 NATO members make it a formidable military power.

Myth

China is overtaking everyone

Reality

The EU leads China in nominal GDP, and EU GDP per capita is more than 3× higher. China's authoritarian model systematically limits innovation, entrepreneurship, and individual freedom — its tech crackdowns wiped hundreds of billions in value. Capital flight is accelerating as wealthy Chinese move assets to Singapore, Canada, and Europe. Its demographic crisis — a rapidly shrinking, aging population with a birth rate of just 1.0 — may be the most severe of any major economy. Youth unemployment is so high Beijing stopped publishing the figures. Its property sector, once 30% of GDP, is in a prolonged collapse. Meanwhile, the EU trades freely with 74 countries through the world's largest network of trade agreements. Overtaking requires foundations China hasn't built.

Why This Matters Now

The world needs European leadership more than ever. Here's the context.

This section provides context — not doom. You've already seen the data on Europe's strength. This is why that strength matters right now.

Democracy is based on trust. If we cannot tell what is true and what is not, we are easily manipulated. Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference is death to democracy by a thousand cuts.

Europe cannot depend on the mood of a 79-year-old man.

⚠️

Democratic Decline Elsewhere

US institutional erosion, authoritarian rhetoric, and parallels to historical democratic collapses show why European leadership matters more than ever. Independent agencies are being gutted, courts politicised, and checks on executive power systematically weakened — patterns historians recognise from the 1930s.

Watch: We're Experts in Fascism. We're Leaving the U.S. (New York Times)
📉

Economic Self-Harm Abroad

Tariff wars, trade chaos, market volatility, and dollar weakness are opportunities for EU leadership — not reasons for fear. And trade wars aren't the only wars: the US bombing of Iran in early 2026 sent oil prices and global uncertainty soaring. Supply chains are shifting, allies are rethinking dependencies, and the EU's single market is better positioned than ever to attract investment from companies looking for stability.

🤖

The Propaganda War on Europe

Russian bots, Chinese state media, and US tech platforms spread anti-EU disinformation daily. Meta, X, and Telegram routinely fail to stop coordinated influence campaigns — and some platform owners actively amplify them. They want you to feel weak. The data says otherwise.

Watch: Propaganda on X – Why Musk helps Putin sway your opinion (DW News)
💰

The Oligarchy Problem

Billionaire influence on politics, subsidy dependence, and tax avoidance erode trust in US institutions. Silicon Valley figures like Peter Thiel are openly working to dismantle democratic safeguards, viewing democracy itself as an obstacle. Europe chose a different path — one where citizens, not billionaires, set the rules.

🔻

Social Regression Elsewhere

While others defund education, healthcare, and social security, Europe is strengthening its social fabric. Public services that took decades to build are being dismantled elsewhere in months — a cautionary tale for anyone who takes the safety net for granted.
